Inspired by Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton, Ü Magazine compiles interviews where individuals share their stories and experiences around a certain theme; the theme of the first issue being all about finding one's own identity. The idea behind this editorial concept was that readers could find elements of the shared stories that they relate to, while at the same time appreciating the unique experiences that make us all unique.
My vision for Ü Magazine was to convey a cozy, handmade, vulnerable feeling from those opening up and sharing their personal experiences, but at the same time capturing the individualistic identity of each story through bright colours. The magazine works to juxtapose the vibrant yellow, pink, and blue with the organic and formal hand-lettered text.
When incorporating hand-drawn imagery and text, I balanced this with more of a minimalistic approach to the layouts of body text and images. As I compiled each interview section together, I kept the interview subject in mind and worked to include photography that would best highlight their unique personality. While I had also asked questions to prompt and guide the interviews, I removed these questions in order to portray each interview as if it were the individual telling their story for themselves.
I pulled quotes from each interview that highlighted the personality and message of their individual stories, as well as offering the reader a chance to connect with the main ideas of the interviews. The magazine itself also opens and closes with messages from myself, the editor, to prompt thoughtful reflection during and after reading.
