A complete brand redesign of Unico, a Canadian food company that specializes in basic Italian canned goods. The objective of the redesign was to improve and modernize the overall aesthetic of the package designs in order to further engage potential buyers, as well as to bring the look of the brand back to its Italian roots through its visual feel.
Unico products are a staple in Italian cooking, but the design of their packages has not changed since it was founded back in 1917, so I felt that a refresh could help them better stand out. However since the original packaging is so iconic and recognizable I made sure not to change too much about the overall layout, while still giving it a more aesthetic and updated design. The colours, object placement, and split-design of the original packaging remains the same, just with warmer and updated graphics. I wanted to make sure not to sacrifice the integrity of the brand by completely overhauling the design.
I updated the photography and brightened up the colours to make the overall look more inviting and appealing. I also decided to give some variation to the packaging by changing the colour on the bottom half of the can according to what category of food was in it, so people would easily be able to spot tomatoes vs beans on the shelves, for example. Overall I wanted this refresh to keep the overall feeling of the original look of the packaging, but giving it a more homey Italian design, as the brand prides itself on selling authentic Italian produce.
